First Grade Fun
In Writer's Workshop we have been working on chapter teaching books! We just started using new pages to write different types of information in our books!
In Math we have been working on addition and subtraction. We have also been practicing fact families. A fact family is 2 addition and 2 subtraction facts using the same 3 numbers.
For example the fact family for 2, 5 and 7 is 2+5=7 5+2=7 7-5=2 7-2=5
We have been thinking about parts and total and sometimes we need to solve for the total, sometimes we need to solve for a missing part. We have done a lot of our math journal pages!
In Fundations we have been practicing 4 new glued sounds: -ang, -ing, -ong and -ung. We have learned the new trick words: why, by, my, try, your, for, where, there and here.
We are enjoying learning about Japanese culture. We have started projects to learn about one part of culture to teach others about it. We have been researching to learn in our little groups in class and look forward to working out Westshire group members on Friday. We made Uni masks to learn about Setsuban festival and learned about Sumi-e art!
In Reader's Workshop we started talking about character traits. Today we talked about outside traits - they are the ones we can see.
We had fun thinking about all our learning to tell you about it on our blog!

First Grade Learning
In Math we have been working on time! We reviewed what we know about analog and digital clocks. The hour hand is the short, wider hand and the minute hand is the tall, skinny one. We learned how to tell if it's a half past time. On an analog clock it's a half past time if the minute hand is pointing to the 6. The hour hand will be between two numbers.
In Forest classroom today we found lots of great creatures!! We found a red back salamander with eggs and LOTS of worms. We read the book Miss Rumphius and cleaned up trash in celebration of Miss Rumphius and Earth Day!
Today we planted seeds and are excited to watch them grow into seedlings!
Miss Susan from the Ava art gallery and thought us about Japanese printblock art!
We started writing our teaching books about Japan to help us with our project presentations.
In Fundations we are working on adding the suffix s to base words with ALL of our glued sounds! We also learned the new trick words: very, also and too.

Catching Up on Learning
In Writer's Workshop we finished our small moment stories! We worked on editing out stories to make them better and had a celebration!
We have been focusing on our read to self goals!
In Fundations - we are working on glued sounds: all, an and am!
In Math we have been looking at patterns and looking at which part of the pattern repeats. We have been practicing skip counting by 2, 5 and 10!
We finished up our States of Matter unit before break by observing the life cycle of a snowman and how he changed from a solid, to a liquid to a gas!
